O que é o Guvcview?

Guvcview (GTK+ UVC Viewer) captures and displays video from UVC-compatible webcams on Linux. It's been around since the early 2010s and has a stable, no-frills codebase. While not under rapid development, it's maintained and works reliably on most modern distributions with plug-and-play support for most USB cameras.

It's best for users who need basic webcam functionality—viewing, recording, taking snapshots—without complexity. This includes casual users, educators, or people setting up simple video feeds. If you're not doing live streaming, multi-source compositing, or advanced audio routing, Guvcview covers the essentials.

Compared to OBS VirtualCam, it feels limited. It doesn’t create virtual webcam devices or support scene composition. But it launches faster, uses fewer resources, and doesn’t require configuration to start recording. If you just need to test a camera or save a quick video, it’s more direct than OBS.

Ideal para: Quick webcam recording or testing hardware without setup.

Dicas para quem vem do Windows

If you're used to OBS VirtualCam, note that Guvcview can't stream to a virtual device for use in Zoom or Discord. It records directly to file. Use AVI for video and JPEG/PNG for snapshots. Keyboard shortcuts are limited—most actions are via GUI. You’ll miss scene switching and audio mixing, but gain simplicity for basic capture tasks.

Guvcview: perguntas frequentes

Can Guvcview work as a virtual webcam on Linux?

No, Guvcview does not create a virtual webcam device. For that, use v4l2loopback with another tool like OBS or ffmpeg.

How do I record audio with Guvcview?

It supports audio capture if your webcam or connected mic is ALSA-compatible. Select the correct audio source in the settings before recording.

Why is my camera not showing up in Guvcview?

Check that the camera is detected with 'ls /dev/video*'. If not, the driver may not be loaded or the device may be in use by another app.

Where are recordings saved by default?

Guvcview saves files in the user's home directory unless a different path is set in the preferences before recording.
