Was ist LMMS?

LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) is a mature open-source digital audio workstation first released in 2004. It has evolved into a stable, feature-rich environment for music creation, particularly strong in beat-driven and electronic genres. Despite its name, it runs well on all major Linux distributions and has been packaged for years in official repositories.

It's ideal for hobbyists, electronic musicians, and beginners exploring music production without a budget. The interface leans toward accessibility, making it approachable for those new to DAWs. It’s especially popular among users creating chiptune, synthwave, or MIDI-based tracks.

Compared to FL Studio, LMMS feels similar in layout and workflow but lacks some polish and advanced mixing tools. Unlike Adobe Audition or Cool Edit Pro, it's not designed for audio editing or post-production. It’s closer to FL Studio in spirit but less refined than commercial alternatives.

Ideal für: Creating electronic music and beats on a budget with MIDI and virtual instruments.

Tipps für Windows-Umsteiger

If you're used to FL Studio or Adobe Audition, note that LMMS doesn't support direct audio recording or advanced waveform editing. Projects use .mmp format, not .flp or .ses. MIDI workflows are similar, but automation and mixing are more basic. Keyboard shortcuts differ—spend time in Preferences to remap. Import samples as WAV or OGG; avoid relying on VSTs unless you set up a bridge like LinVST.

LMMS: häufige Fragen

Can LMMS open FL Studio projects?

No, LMMS cannot open .flp files directly. You’ll need to manually recreate the project using its pattern and instrument system.

Does LMMS support VST plugins?

Yes, but not natively. Use a VST bridge like LinVST or CVBridge to load Windows VSTs, or use native LV2 plugins on Linux.

Is LMMS good for recording live instruments?

No. LMMS is not designed for audio recording. Use it for MIDI and synth-based composition, not live input or editing.

How does LMMS compare to FL Studio?

It’s inspired by FL Studio’s interface and workflow but is less polished and feature-complete. Great for learning, not for professional production.
