Telegram as a Linux alternative to Signal Desktop
Updated
Our verdict
Telegram is a functional replacement for Signal Desktop if you prioritize cloud sync, large file sharing, and group management over strict end-to-end encryption defaults. It is not a drop-in swap because your contacts must also use Telegram; you cannot message Signal users directly. Choose Telegram if you need to send files larger than 100 MB or manage huge communities. Stick with Signal if you require default E2E encryption for all chats or if your contact list is locked into the Signal ecosystem. The interface is familiar, but the security model differs significantly in how keys are managed and shared.

Opening your Signal Desktop files
There is no direct file compatibility between Signal Desktop and Telegram. You cannot open Signal database files in Telegram. If you need to transfer media, you must export images or videos from Signal and manually upload them to Telegram. Chat history is not portable between the two platforms as they use different data structures and encryption protocols.

Can I message my Signal contacts on Telegram?
No. Telegram and Signal are separate networks. Your contacts must also install and register on Telegram to chat with you there.
Is Telegram as secure as Signal by default?
Not exactly. Signal encrypts everything by default. Telegram encrypts standard chats server-side; only 'Secret Chats' are end-to-end encrypted by default.
Does Telegram require my phone to be online?
No. Telegram apps are standalone. You can use the desktop client without your phone connected, unlike some other messengers.
