Foliate as a Linux alternative to Adobe Digital Editions
Updated
Our verdict
Foliate is an excellent replacement for reading open EPUB and PDF files, offering a modern, distraction-free GNOME interface with better customization than Adobe Digital Editions. However, it is not a drop-in solution for users who rely on DRM-protected Adobe content, as Foliate lacks support for Adobe ID authentication and ADEB decryption. If your library consists entirely of unprotected files, Foliate is a superior, lightweight choice. If you actively borrow or purchase DRM-locked books from libraries or stores using Adobe’s system, you will need a different tool or a workaround, as Foliate cannot open those protected files directly.

What works the same
- Supports open EPUB and PDF file formats
- Allows adding bookmarks and notes/annotations
- Provides a reading progress indicator
- Offers dark and light theme options for comfort
What is different
- No support for Adobe DRM (ADEB) protected files
- No Adobe ID login or cloud sync functionality
- No built-in library management or metadata editing
- Lacks specific import/export tools for Adobe note formats
Opening your Adobe Digital Editions files
Foliate opens standard, unencrypted EPUB and PDF files seamlessly. It cannot open Adobe DRM-protected files (often saved as .acsm or encrypted .epub) because it does not implement the Adobe Content Server authentication or decryption protocol. If you have books protected by Adobe DRM, you must first remove the protection using a third-party tool (which may violate terms of service) to convert them to open EPUB or PDF before Foliate can read them. There is no direct file format compatibility for the protected content itself.
Switching from Adobe Digital Editions to Foliate, step by step
- Identify which books in your Adobe Digital Editions library are DRM-free.
- Export or copy the open EPUB and PDF files from your ADE library folder.
- Install Foliate via your package manager or Flathub.
- Open the copied files in Foliate to verify they render correctly.
- Manually re-add bookmarks or notes if your workflow requires them, as they do not transfer automatically.

Can I open my library books from OverDrive or Libby in Foliate?
No, not directly. Most library books use Adobe DRM. You would need to use a third-party de-DRM tool to convert them to open EPUB first, which is a legal gray area and technically complex.
Does Foliate sync my reading position across devices?
No. Foliate is a local application. It does not have cloud sync or an account system to synchronize progress or notes between your desktop and phone.
Is Foliate better for reading than Adobe Digital Editions?
For open files, yes. Foliate has a modern interface, better font rendering, and more display options like sepia and invert modes. ADE is dated and primarily focused on DRM enforcement.
