Remmina as a Linux alternative to RustDesk
Updated
Our verdict
Remmina is a solid remote desktop client for Linux, but it is not a direct replacement for RustDesk if you rely on its self-hosted relay server or NAT traversal features. Remmina connects to existing RDP, VNC, SSH, or X2Go endpoints; it does not provide a built-in server to expose your local machine to the internet. If you already run RDP or VNC servers on your remote machines and have a way to reach them (like a port forward or VPN), Remmina works well. However, if you need RustDesk’s specific ability to connect through NAT without pre-configuring ports on both ends, Remmina cannot do that. It is a client, not a full remote access suite.

What works the same
- Open-source remote desktop client
- Supports standard protocols like RDP and VNC
- File transfer and clipboard sharing capabilities
- Connection profile management with saved credentials
- Cross-platform connectivity (can connect to Windows/Mac/Linux)
What is different
- Remmina lacks a built-in relay server for NAT traversal
- RustDesk provides a self-hostable server component; Remmina is client-only
- RustDesk has a unique protocol for direct peer-to-peer connections through NAT
- Remmina requires the remote system to have RDP/VNC/SSH explicitly enabled and accessible
- RustDesk includes a unified client/server binary; Remmina relies on external protocol servers
Opening your RustDesk files
Remmina uses its own .remmina profile format for saving connection settings. It does not natively import RustDesk configuration files or server settings. You will need to manually recreate connection profiles in Remmina, entering the IP address, port, and credentials for each remote machine. There is no automatic conversion tool between RustDesk’s configuration and Remmina’s profile format.
Switching from RustDesk to Remmina, step by step
- Ensure your remote machines have RDP, VNC, or SSH services enabled and accessible
- Identify the correct IP addresses and ports for each remote system
- Install Remmina via your package manager or Flathub
- Create new connection profiles in Remmina for each remote machine
- Test each connection to verify protocol support and authentication
- Configure firewall rules on remote systems to allow incoming connections if needed
Key features of Remmina
- Supports RDP, VNC, SSH, and X2Go protocols
- Tabbed interface for managing multiple connections
- Connection profiles with saved settings and credentials
- Support for external plugins to extend functionality
- Clipboard sharing and file transfer between local and remote machines
- Fullscreen and multi-monitor support
- Keyboard shortcut mapping across sessions
- Integrated SSH tunneling for secure RDP/VNC
How to install Remmina on Linux
flatpak install flathub org.remmina.Remminasudo apt install remminasudo apt install remminasudo dnf install remminasudo pacman -S remminasudo zypper install remminaFrequently asked questions
Can Remmina connect to a RustDesk server directly?
No. Remmina supports standard protocols like RDP, VNC, SSH, and X2Go. It does not support RustDesk’s proprietary protocol or connect to a RustDesk relay server. You must use standard protocols on the remote machine.
Does Remmina work through NAT without opening ports?
No. Remmina is a client that connects to a known IP address. It does not have built-in NAT traversal or relay capabilities. You need a way to reach the remote machine, such as a public IP, port forwarding, or a VPN.
Is Remmina suitable for controlling a Windows machine from Linux?
Yes, if the Windows machine has RDP enabled. Remmina’s RDP support is robust and allows for full remote control, file transfer, and clipboard sharing. This is one of its strongest use cases.
