FreeCAD as a Linux alternative to Microsoft Paint 3D
Updated
Our verdict
FreeCAD is not a good replacement for Microsoft Paint 3D for casual 3D doodling or quick textured models. It's designed for engineering and precise parametric modeling, not intuitive painting or simple 3D art. If you're used to Paint 3D’s simplicity, FreeCAD will feel complex and overly technical. However, for users who need real 3D design with constraints, accurate measurements, and export for 3D printing, FreeCAD is powerful. But it won’t help someone just wanting to paint on 3D shapes or make animated 3D stickers.

What works the same
- Both can create and edit 3D meshes
- Support exporting to OBJ and STL formats
- Allow basic 2D drawing and sketching
- Cross-platform: available on Linux, Windows, and macOS
- Open source and free to use
What is different
- FreeCAD is parametric and history-based; Paint 3D is direct, freeform modeling
- FreeCAD lacks texture painting and real-time 3D canvas painting
- Paint 3D supports simple animation and layering; FreeCAD does not
- FreeCAD has no built-in support for 3D stickers or casual UI elements
- FreeCAD requires technical knowledge of constraints and workbenches
Opening your Microsoft Paint 3D files
FreeCAD does not support Microsoft Paint 3D's native file format (.3MF with specific metadata). While it can import and export generic 3MF and OBJ files, textures and color information may not transfer correctly. You can sometimes extract meshes from Paint 3D exports and re-import them into FreeCAD, but full scene fidelity, including layers and paint strokes, is lost. There's no direct way to edit a Paint 3D project in FreeCAD and retain all visual details.
Switching from Microsoft Paint 3D to FreeCAD, step by step
- Export your 3D model from Paint 3D as OBJ or STL
- Import the mesh into FreeCAD using the Mesh Workbench
- Rebuild parametric features manually if needed
- Use the Draft or Sketcher workbench for 2D elements
- Export final design as STEP, STL, or DXF as required
Key features of FreeCAD
- Parametric modeling with history tree
- Support for STEP, IGES, STL, DXF, OBJ, IFC, SVG
- Built‑in 2D sketcher with constraints
- Python scripting for automation
- Workbenches for FEA, BIM, CAM, robot simulation
- Add‑ons and macros from the community
- Cross‑platform installation via Flatpak, AUR, Debian, OpenSUSE
How to install FreeCAD on Linux
flatpak install flathub org.freecad.FreeCADsudo apt install freecadsudo pacman -S freecadsudo zypper install FreeCADFrequently asked questions
Can I paint textures directly on 3D models in FreeCAD like in Paint 3D?
No, FreeCAD does not support painting textures directly onto 3D models. It focuses on geometry, not surface painting. You’d need an external tool like Blender for that.
Is FreeCAD easier to use than Paint 3D for beginners?
No. FreeCAD has a steep learning curve and is meant for technical design. Paint 3D is far simpler for casual 3D creation.
Can I open a .3mf file from Paint 3D in FreeCAD?
You can import .3mf files, but only as static meshes. Colors, textures, and layers from Paint 3D are not preserved.
